Arms and the Carmen

The Carmen's motto is Scite Cite Certo. It means Skilfully, Swiftly, Surely and was adopted in 1892.

The arms were granted in 1929 and the supporters in 1938. The picture is taken directly from the original grant, held at Guildhall. The original design was created by the Windsor Herald.

The arms comprise a silver sword with a red pommel and hilt, point uppermost between two cart wheels, on a gold background, with a black helm on a twisted band of gold and red, surmounted by a crest - a silver cart horse with a black collar, resting its left hoof on a wheel.

The supporters are two dray horses, harnessed and bridled, with collars of leaved roses. (The feathers are ornamental, and not part of the heraldry.)

The arms are represented on the Master's badge, which was designed by Lancaster Herald in 1938, replacing that of 1893, and itself replaced again in 1990 when it was stolen.
